Does your refund need a tax return?

Most people who are owed tax back don't need a Self Assessment return at all. HMRC sorts those refunds directly, usually free, through your personal tax account. Worth checking which side you're on before you pay anyone.

    HMRC sorts these for you

    • Your tax code was wrong, or you paid emergency tax after starting a job
    • You've had a P800 letter from HMRC
    • You stopped work part way through the year
    • Work expenses under £2,500, like uniform or professional fees
    • Marriage allowance

You don't need us for these. Go to your HMRC personal tax account.

These come through a tax return

    • You're a CIS subcontractor and had tax deducted at source
    • Your payments on account were set higher than your actual bill
    • A side business made a loss you can set against other income
    • You invested through EIS or SEIS
    • You're a higher-rate taxpayer claiming extra pension or Gift Aid relief
    • Your work expenses are over £2,500
    • You've filed before and think you missed something

    Where the money comes from

The refunds a tax return can unlock

    01

    CIS deductions

Contractors take 20% off your payments before you're paid, or 30% if you're not registered for CIS. That's an estimate. Your return works out the real bill once expenses and allowances are counted, and if more was deducted than you owe, HMRC repays the difference. Bring your CIS payment and deduction statements.

    02

Payments on account set too high

Payments on account are based on last year's bill. If your income dropped, you may have paid in advance for tax you don't owe. Your return settles it, and you can also claim to reduce the next payments.

    03

    Losses from a side business

A trading loss can often be set against your other income for the same year or the year before, which can mean tax back on your salary. Conditions apply, including a cap on how much relief you can claim, so this one needs checking properly.

    04

    EIS and SEIS investments

EIS gives income tax relief of 30% of what you invested, and SEIS gives 50%. You claim it on your return with the EIS3 or SEIS3 certificate, and you can carry it back to the previous tax year.

    05

Higher-rate pension and Gift Aid relief

Personal pensions that claim relief at source, and Gift Aid donations, only get basic-rate relief added automatically. If you pay tax at 40% or 45%, the extra relief has to be claimed, and a return is the usual way to do it.

    06

    Work expenses over £2,500

Below £2,500 you can claim directly from HMRC. Above it, the claim has to go through Self Assessment.

    07

Something you missed on an earlier return

You can amend a return within 12 months of the 31 January deadline for that year. After that, overpayment relief lets you claim back tax for up to four years.

    Why choose Record OS

    How Record OS is different

    Less work for you

Upload what you've got and we take it from there. Our technology checks your documents and tells us what's missing, so you're not digging through old emails for a P60 or typing numbers into boxes.

One price, agreed before we start

Three tiers, all published on the site. You pay for the one your return falls into and that's the figure. Nothing gets added later because the return turned out to be fiddlier than it looked.

A review that looks for money

Every return goes to one of our qualified UK accountants before it's filed. They're checking the numbers, and they're also hunting for reliefs you didn't know you could claim. That second bit is most of the value.

    Someone to ask

Message or call whenever something's unclear. You'll speak to someone who actually works on tax returns.

    You get the working out

Your return comes with a covering letter in plain English. It says what we claimed and why, points at the document behind each claim, and flags anything where the answer wasn't obvious. Keep it. If HMRC ever comes asking, it's the thing you'll want.

We'll tell you what to change

Filing is a record of what already happened. The more useful conversation is what to do before next April, and we'll have it with you while there's still time to act.

    Every Self Assessment situation

Employment, self-employment, property, foreign income, capital gains, residence. Whatever your return needs, we file it. An extra page doesn't make you someone else's problem.

    Pricing

    Transparent. Fixed.

We charge a fixed fee per filing, never a share of your refund.

    Questions

    Before you ask

Probably not, and you may not need to pay anyone. If it's a wrong tax code, emergency tax or a P800 letter, HMRC sorts it through your personal tax account. We can help when the refund depends on a tax return, for example extra pension relief as a higher-rate taxpayer or work expenses over £2,500.

Your return works out what you actually owe for the year, after expenses and allowances. That figure is set against the deductions your contractors already took. If they took more than you owe, HMRC repays the difference. We'll need your CIS payment and deduction statements.

No. You pay one fixed price per filing, agreed before you commit. Whatever comes back is yours.

Yes, within the time limits. An amendment is possible within 12 months of the 31 January deadline for that year, and overpayment relief goes back up to four years.

HMRC issues the repayment once it has processed your return. The timing is set by HMRC, not by us, so we won't promise a date.

Yes. Every return is prepared and signed off by our qualified UK accountants. The team includes ICAEW members and tax specialists with longstanding experience in roles at HMRC and top firms like BDO.

The filed return, and a covering letter that explains it in plain English: what we claimed, why, and which document each claim rests on. Where something was a judgement call, it says so and tells you how we called it.
